You would think that after 52 years of sparring in the newsroom and fighting over stories, Clark Kent would have had enough of Lois Lane.

But no. Clark--in a move destined to make comic book history--has asked Lane to marry him.

She will say yes, and in about three months he will reveal to her the secret she should have guessed years ago.

Yes, Clark Kent will reveal that he is Superman, who is “faster than a speeding bullet and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound,” and tell her that was how he got all those super scoops over the decades.

These are heady days at DC Comics, publisher of the Superman comic books. The company is printing wedding announcements, revealing that the two reporters for the Daily Planet newspaper are Pulitzer Prize winners and will wed.

Editor Michael Carlin says that the happy couple have not set a date but added that the “current crew of writers and artists all feel they will eventually get married.”

At first, Carlin said, the plot was to have Kent ask Lane to marry him and for her to say no, because she still loves “the man of steel.”

But Carlin says the characters themselves seemed to determine a different answer.

The proposal will be made in the latest issue of Superman out this week when Kent decides, because he has lost his super strength after an overexposure to red kryptonite, that it is time to get married and settle down like any average American.

Lane will say yes in a later issue, and then, because any character who believes in “truth, justice and the American way” can’t start a marriage with a lie, Kent will tell her who he really is.

“We are trying to play this as straight as possible. There will be no magic kisses or brainwashing to make her forget what she hears,” Carlin said.
