‘Glory’ Rides Civil War Trend

Share

The Civil War drama “Glory” is clinging to the No. 1 position on the Billboard magazine rental chart, largely on the strength of the Civil War mania that swept the country after the recent PBS series. But “Glory” looks like it will be ingloriously blasted out of the top spot by “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” which moved up two notches to No. 2. “Fire Birds,” the military-action, “Top Gun”-esque movie starring Nicolas Cage, is the surprise rental hit of the fall so far, winging up three more rungs to No. 6.

* This blockbuster romantic comedy was one of the year’s biggest hits, grossing more than $166 million. Starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, the twist in “Pretty Woman” is that the Cinderella-like character (Roberts) is a hooker. It debuted at No. 27, but could vault into the Top Five next week. However, its full rental potential may never be realized, since it’s selling for a relatively inexpensive $20. VIDEO RENTALS
