A powerful earthquake centered in Afghanistan’s rugged Hindu Kush mountain range sent shock waves throughout the subcontinent early today. Two dozen people were reported injured in this border city.

The quake, which was felt as far away as New Delhi, had a magnitude of 7.0, said a spokesman at Pakistan’s meteorological center in Peshawar.

The city nearest the epicenter is the war-ravaged Afghan capital of Kabul, just 60 miles to the south. The Afghan Embassy in Pakistan had no reports of either damage or casualties in Kabul.

In Peshawar, about 150 miles south of the epicenter, buildings shook and frightened residents ran into the street, Radio Pakistan reported. It said the quake injured two dozen people in the city.

In the Indian capital of New Delhi, 590 miles southeast of the epicenter, office workers in high-rise buildings were evacuated as a safety precaution, but there were no reports of damage.

India’s meteorology department recorded the quake with a magnitude of 6.5, slightly less than Pakistan’s reading.

A 7.0 quake is capable of widespread heavy damage.
