Harvard Club Claims Another Championship in Water Polo

Share

The Harvard Water Polo Foundation senior team returned from Florida with its third national title in a little more than a year after winning the indoor championship in Fort Lauderdale last weekend. Harvard defeated the Sunset club of San Diego, 16-6, in the final of the 12-team tournament at the Swimming Hall of Fame pool.

Harvard, which also won the national indoor tournament last year and the outdoor tournament two months ago, swept six matches in Florida and outscored the opposition, 113-38. Harvard’s smallest margin of victory was six goals even though the team was without five starters who remained in California to train with the national squad.

Harvard goalie Craig Wilson, a UC Santa Barbara graduate, was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Named to the all-tournament team were fellow graduates Jeff Chase (UCLA), Scott Leonard (UCLA), Hank Peterson (UCLA), Giacomo Rossi (USC) and Bill Schoening (California). Harvard is coached by Rick Corso, the Harvard High water polo coach who created the foundation 1 1/2 years ago.
