Cecil Fielder of the Detroit Tigers was named the Associated Press’ player of the year.

Fielder, whose 51 home runs made him only the 11th player--and the first in 13 years--to reach the 50-homer plateau, was a clear winner in the nationwide poll of sportswriters and broadcasters. Fielder received 90 1/2 votes, Oakland A’s outfielder Rickey Henderson 39 1/2 and Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Barry Bonds 27.

Jeff Torborg, who led an about-face by the Chicago White Sox, was named the AP’s manager of the year. Torborg took a team that finished last in 1989 with a 69-92 record and guided the White Sox to 94-68 in 1990 for the second-best record in the American League and third-best in the majors.
