GOLF : Norman Tied With Simpson at 5-Under 66
Greg Norman, who has played poorly for three months, dominated the par-five holes Thursday in a five-under-par 66 that gave him a share of the first-round lead with Tim Simpson in golf’s richest tournament, the Nabisco Championships.
Norman, who holds the money-winning lead with $907,977, played the three par-five holes four under. He holed a 40-yard sand shot for eagle-3 on the fifth hole and birdied the other two.
Simpson had seven birdies in his trek over the Cypress Creek course at Champions.
“It’s 7,400 yards if it’s an inch,” Simpson said of the par-71 layout that is listed at 7,187 yards.
The players are chasing $3.5 million in individual prize money in the last official event on the PGA Tour schedule.
Nick Price overcame a double-bogey 6 on the 11th hole and was tied for third at 68 with Jodie Mudd.
Billy Mayfair and Chip Beck were next at 69. Davis Love and Peter Jacobsen, at 70, were the only others to break par on the course that served as the site of the 1969 U.S. Open.
