University Runs All Over Woodbridge

Share

University gained 197 yards rushing in a thick fog and spoiled Woodbridge’s homecoming as the Trojans beat the Warriors, 35-22, Friday in a Sea View League game at Irvine High School.

University (3-5, 1-2 in league) scored on its first possession when Brian Vail teamed up with Josh Taussig on a 70-yard touchdown pass. Nathan Moreale added the extra point.

The fog settled in during the second quarter. When University’s Jerry Apana, who rushed for 76 yards on 12 carries, ran for the Trojans’ second touchdown with 7 minutes 13 seconds left in the half, visibility was decreasing and the Trojans’ chances of winning improving. “The fog could only help us because of the deception we use in our running game,” said University coach Mark Cunningham.

The Trojans scored again before the half on a run by Todd Anderson, but the point-after attempt failed.

Woodbridge (2-5-1, 0-2-1) scored on the opening possession of the second half. University answered in the final quarter when Apana scored again, but the Warriors came back with a 68-yard drive. A run by Marc Walker was University’s final score.
