Fog Finishes Santa Margarita’s 21-0 Victory Over Brawley

MISSION VIEJO — Santa Margarita High School stayed unbeaten Friday with a 21-0 victory over Brawley in a nonleague football game at Saddleback College that was stopped just before halftime because of dense fog.
The game was called with 62 seconds left in the half because visibility was about 10 feet. Officials and both coaches decided to wait 20 minutes to see if the fog would lift. When it didn’t, the decision was made to call the game.
“It is an official win for Santa Margarita,” Santa Margarita Coach Jim Hartigan said.
Santa Margarita (8-0) scored in its first possession on halfback Jason Ortiz’s 11-yard run, capping a 10-play, 61-yard drive. Travis Lucero kicked his first of three extra points to make the score 7-0 with 8:26 left in the first quarter.
Following a third-down quick kick by Brawley, Santa Margarita halfback Josh Ireland ran 57 yards for a touchdown, giving Santa Margarita a 14-0 lead with 7:14 left in the first quarter.
Quarterback Trevor Yankoff scored from four yards out with 1:04 left in the first half.
