Longest Prep Win Streak Ends at 69
Robert Gandara’s 34-yard field goal in the third quarter led Lordsburg to a 9-8 victory over Animas Friday night, ending the nation’s longest winning streak in high school football at 69 victories.
Animas, which had not lost since the final regular-season game of the 1984 season and was ranked No. 1 in the state in Class AA, came up three wins short in its pursuit of the record 72-game winning streak established by East Hudson High of Michigan from 1968 to 1975.
During the streak, Animas had won a state record six consecutive Class AA championships.
