Animal Research

Share

I am a cancer patient, I strongly support medical research and I want a cure to be found for my disease. But I do not want to see lost and stray animals sold to UC San Diego School of Medicine or any other research facility. I want to make it clear that the two attitudes are not contradictory.

Certainly there are many biomedical institutions in San Diego that do not have contracts with the county (animal) shelter. They are getting along just fine without pound animals for research. The Salk Institute, Scripps Clinic and the La Jolla Cancer Center are just a few. Their research has not come to a halt because they do not have pound animals to use.

Why in the world should anyone believe that UCSD is the only facility that cannot survive without them?

There is no reason why we cannot have both: A real shelter for our lost pets and quality medical research. It is not a choice. As a cancer patient I resent UCSD’s effort to make it look like we must choose, when they know perfectly well that it is not so.

I urge all citizens of San Diego to vote no on Proposition C.
