SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : Northridge, San Luis Obispo Both Win to Set Up Showdown
Abo Velasco kicked a 34-yard field goal with 29 seconds left to lift Cal State Northridge to a 10-7 victory over Santa Clara in a Western Football Conference game Saturday night at Santa Clara.
Northridge, 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the WFC, clinched at least a share of the conference title with the victory over the Broncos (5-4, 1-3).
The Matadors will play Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for the WFC championship next week at Northridge.
San Luis Obispo (7-1, 3-1) defeated Southern Utah (5-4, 2-2), 42-21, behind quarterback David Lafferty, who completed 22 of 32 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns.
Lafferty has passed for 1,990 yards this season, eclipsing the single-season school record of 1,978 yards set by Robert Perez in 1986.
Redlands 24, Pomona-Pitzer 14--Shaun Trejo rushed for 119 yards and Curt Landreth gained 103 yards as the Bulldogs (6-1, 4-0) beat the Sagehens (3-3, 2-2) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Pomona.
Pomona’s Nate Kirtman had a school-record 103-yard kickoff return with 1:30 let in the first half.
St. Mary’s 45, Santa Barbara 16--Tailback Daryl Rogers rushed for 142 in 28 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead the Gaels (5-3) over the Gauchos (4-3) in a nonconference game at Goleta.
Cal Lutheran 20, Whittier 0--Alonzo Williams scored on a 47-yard run and Jay Weber had a 37-yard touchdown run to lead the Kingsmen (2-6) past the Poets (0-7) in a nonconference game at Whittier.
Azusa Pacific 24, La Verne 7--Brian Hunt completed 20 of 42 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns as the Cougars (6-1) defeated the Leopards (2-5) in a nonconference game at Azusa.
