On a cold, dank Saturday night at Harbor College, one better suited for sitting next to a fireplace, Moorpark College lit a blaze of its own with nearly 600 yards of offense in a 41-12 Western State Conference football win.

Freddie Bradley led the way, rushing for a career-high 267 yards in 25 carries. He gained 200 yards in the first half and scored on runs of 83, one and one yards. It was the third consecutive game in which the All-American tailback set a career high in rushing yardage.

Bradley raised his total of career regular-season rushing touchdowns to 38--five short of the national junior college record. The mark is shared by O. J. Simpson and two other players. Bradley has three remaining regular-season games in which to continue his assault on the mark.

Bradley has rushed for 710 yards in his past three games.

“I thought he was going to be stopped tonight, because there was a power outage and we weren’t sure we were going to be able to play,” Moorpark Coach Jim Bittner said. “That’s the only way to stop him, is to turn out the lights.”

Bradley, despite playing with an upset stomach, turned out the lights on Harbor with his 83-yard touchdown run on Moorpark’s first play from scrimmage. The touchdown provided a quick answer to an 87-yard return by Harbor’s Bill Harris on the opening kickoff.

Moorpark scored 41 consecutive points before Harbor posted the game’s final touchdown with slightly more than three minutes remaining.

Moorpark’s Jamal Anderson added 96 yards in 13 carries and Terrance Thomas rushed for a career-high 48 yards in 11 carries. Quarterback Chris Dutra completed two of four passes for 49 yards while teammate Del Marine completed one of four passes. The completion was a 49-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Marsh.

Both, however, were victimized by Harbor’s Carlos Roberts, who picked off two passes. The interceptions were Roberts’ sixth and seventh of the season.

On a down note for Moorpark, running back Johnel Turner suffered a dislocated left shoulder and Melvin Nunnery aggravated an injury to his left knee.

Moorpark (6-1 overall, 5-1 in conference play) led, 21-7, at the half on Bradley’s long run, a three-yard touchdown run by Anderson and the Marsh-to-Marine scoring pass. Moorpark held Harbor (4-3, 3-3) to just 82 first-half yards and 112 total yards.
