Stadium Parking Prices to Increase by 67%

Share

Special-event parking prices at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium will rise from $3 to $5 under a plan approved this week by the San Diego City Council.

The increase, which will apply to the Holiday Bowl in December and to three “dirt events,” brings the stadium’s parking prices into line with those of others in the state, according to Assistant City Manager Jack McGrory. By bringing in $100,000 more a year in revenue, the increase will help make the stadium self-sufficient, McGrory said.

But Councilman Bruce Henderson, one of three council members who opposed the hike, called it “borderline consumer fraud,” charging that instead of raising “up-front” ticket prices for tractor pulls, mud bogs or motocross events, the city is attempting to hide the higher cost in the parking fees.

“You keep ticket prices lower to sell more tickets, but--surprise--the cost is more when you get to the stadium,” he said.
