HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Hartman Wins Cross-Country Title

Dave Hartman of Canyon High won his third Golden League cross-country title Wednesday, finishing in 15 minutes 36 seconds at Lake Hughes Golf Course, but Quartz Hill, buoyed by Joe Bedortha and Russell Gatlin’s third and fourth-place finishes, edged Canyon, 44-48, for the team title.

Quartz Hill had lost to Canyon in three previous meetings this season. Ridgecrest Burroughs took third with 66 points, Palmdale fourth with 91, Saugus fifth with 106 and Antelope Valley sixth with 162.

In other cross-country meets:

Alpha League finals--Kirsten Berger placed second to lead L. A. Baptist past Maranatha, 28-32, and the Knights clinched their second consecutive girls’ league cross-country title at O’Melveny Park in Northridge.

Village Christian was third with 66 points.

Berger finished in 20:47 and led a contingent of five L. A. Baptist runners among the top 10. Julie Cory (21:58) and Sarah Weitzel (22:01) placed fifth and sixth, and Jennifer Overlock (22:18) and Marijane Unter (22:20) finished ninth and 10th.

In the boys’ race, Robert Riviello (17:23) placed fourth to lift Village Christian to a second-place finish with 57 points. L.A. Baptist placed third with 65. Maranatha won with 17 points.

San Fernando Valley League finals--Giselle Svemeredi (19:27)and Jessica Silva (20:21) placed first and third to lead Bell-Jeff to its second consecutive girls’ league title at Griffith Park.

Jose Diaz (15:39) and Mike Morgan (15:41) placed second and third to lift Bell-Jeff past La Salle, 32-42, in the boys’ competition. Fraylan Sanchez of St. Francis won in 15:15.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Birmingham d. Van Nuys, 15-12, 15-9, 15-9--Tina Larson had six kills, two blocks and five service aces to lead host Birmingham (12-2, 9-1), which clinched its third consecutive Mid-Valley League title.

North Hollywood d. Poly, 16-14, 15-12, 13-15, 15-6--Seanna Gunn had 17 kills for host North Hollywood (8-6, 6-4) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match.

WATER POLO

Royal 13, Thousand Oaks 2--Jack Kocur scored four goals to lead Royal (19-3, 9-0), which won its 37th consecutive Marmonte League match and clinched its 10th consecutive title.
