Corona del Mar had to forfeit a water polo game with University as a result of playing too many games in the Stanford tournament last weekend.

Corona del Mar (22-4, second-ranked in the county) forfeited Wednesday’s game because of a Southern Section rule limiting a team to four games in a 16-team tournament.

Corona del Mar, No. 1-ranked El Dorado, Foothill, Newport Harbor (No. 3), Sunny Hills (No. 7), Tustin (No. 9), University and Long Beach Wilson each played five games in the tournament.

Bill Clark of the Southern Section office said he became aware of the violation in “the normal review process” and has informed the Southern Section schools involved.

“I called the schools (Monday) to say these these were my concerns, to please place review of what has happened and please correspond with me,” Clark said.

Southern Section schools are allowed to play games and tournaments adding up to 18 points. Each team involved was told that the fifth game played in the tournament would count as one point and they would have to drop a game from their schedule.

However, Corona del Mar was the only school that did not have a nonleague game left to cancel. Therefore, it had to forfeit.

Corona del Mar is tied with University and Newport Harbor and the Sea View League title will be decided by a coin flip today.
