The Buffalo Sabres, sluggish after a two-day layoff, were fortunate to get a 3-3 tie against the Boston Bruins at Buffalo Wednesday night.

Only the strong work in goal by Clint Malarchuk (34 saves) prevented the Bruins (6-4-2) from snapping a five-game winless streak on the road.

Rick Vaive, Alexander Mogilny and Mikko Makela scored for the Sabres (3-5-4)

Montreal 4, Hartford 2--Russ Courtnall scored twice in leading the Canadiens past the Whalers at Hartford, Conn.

The Canadiens (7-6-1) also got goals from Petr Svoboda and Denis Savard.

It was the fifth consecutive loss for the Whalers (4-7-2), who have allowed eight goals in 29 power-play attempts during their losing streak.

Winnipeg 1, Edmonton 0--Pat Elynuik scored 23 seconds into overtime and Bob Essensa stopped 34 shots for his third career shutout to lead the Jets past the Oilers at Edmonton.

The back-to-back shutouts marked the first time the Oilers (2-7-2) have failed to score in consecutive games. The Jets (5-7-1) were outshot by the Oilers, 34-24, but Winnipeg killed off six power plays.
