West Virginia outgained Penn State, but the Nittany Lions still continued their dominance over the Mountaineers.

With reserve quarterback Tom Bill passing for one touchdown and running for another, No. 24 Penn State defeated West Virginia, 31-19, Saturday at Morgantown, W.Va., to give Penn State Coach Joe Paterno his 23rd victory in 25 games against the Mountaineers.

West Virginia (3-5) outrushed Penn State, 176-134, outpassed the Nittany Lions, 153-112, and controlled the ball for three more minutes.

But Penn State (6-2) intercepted three passes and got a solid performance from Bill, who came off the bench last week and lifted Penn State to a 9-0 victory over Alabama.

Bill replaced Tony Sacca with 6:42 left in the second quarter and Penn State leading, 7-3. Bill had been the Penn State starter before withdrawing from school to enter an alcohol treatment program. He returned to Penn State this fall.

“We just couldn’t get unwound and I thought we ought to try something,” Paterno said.

Bill completed seven of 12 passes for 99 yards, including a nine-yard touchdown pass to Terrence Smith. Bill, who also scored on a five-yard run, came into the game after Sacca threw a pass into the hands of defender Kwamee Smith, who dropped the ball.

Syracuse 35, Boston College 6--Freshman quarterback Marvin Graves connected with Rob Carpenter on a 61-yard touchdown pass play and set up another touchdown with a 57-yard run to lead the Orangemen (5-2-2) over the Eagles (4-4) in a nonconference game at Newton, Mass.

The Orangemen padded a 21-6 halftime lead with two touchdowns--both following interceptions--on the first four offensive plays of the second half.
