Surfer Andino Closer to Points Title After First-Round Victory
Dino Andino of San Clemente moved one step closer to the Professional Surfing Assn. of America points title Saturday, winning his first-round heat at the U.S. championships at Ocean Beach in San Francisco.
Andino, who has finished second overall on the tour the past two years, is leading Charlie Kuhn of Indian Harbor, Fla., by 428 points in the overall standings.
Other Orange County surfers advancing Saturday were Shane Beschen of San Clemente, Matt Archbold of San Clemente, Vince de la Pena of Laguna Niguel, Kirk Tice of Huntington Beach, Pat O’Connell of Laguna Niguel and John Parmenter of Huntington Beach. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals are scheduled for today. The winner will take home $7,000.
