SHORT TAKES : Donahue Focuses on E. St. Louis
Phil Donahue heads to this once-prosperous Mississippi River town to ask, “Can Anything Be Done to Save This Dying City?”
The “Donahue” show will be taped Monday at a high school here.
The New York-based syndicated program will look at the transformation from a national rail and stockyard center to “a desolate and dying city,” spokeswoman Alyssa Schwartz said.
“Thousands of jobs have gone with the closing of factories, leaving the city a pocket of hopeless poverty, trash-strewn vacant lots, block after block of boarded-up houses, and crime and drugs running rampant,” Schwartz said.
No date has been selected for the segment to air nationally.
