Sunny Hills Routs Sonora, Wins Third Title in Row
Sunny Hills High secured its third consecutive Freeway League football title with a 47-0 victory over Sonora Thursday night at Buena Park High.
The Lancers (7-3, 5-0 in league) took 28-0 halftime lead behind the play of quarterback Hakeim McKenzie and running backs Kenny Overby and Mike Sullivan.
Overby scored on runs of 46 and 16 yards, and Sullivan scored on a 13-yard run. McKenzie completed a 44-yard pass to Stephen Choe for another touchdown.
Sullivan, Overby and McKenzie left the game with 7:11 remaining in the first half, then returned in the second half to produce another touchdown and a 34-0 lead.
Overby rushed for 125 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries.
It was a particularly frustrating night for Sonora, which finished its second consecutive winless league season (0-5).
Both teams had problems in the first seven minutes. Each turned the ball over twice on fumbles, and Sunny Hills’ Clayton Lau intercepted a pass by Sonora quarterback Todd Fletcher.
