Golfers who dread landing in a sand trap may envy an Ohio Marine stationed in Saudi Arabia, who will have just the club to practice with.

Mary Amlin shipped her son, Doug, a sand wedge and three orange fluorescent golf balls last week to improve his sand game.

“I couldn’t send him all of his clubs, just the best one,” Amlin said. “He’s just a pleasure golfer. He never tells me his scores.”

Amlin said the idea began as a gag suggested by a colleague at Heidelberg College, where she works as secretary in the public relations office. A golf course supplied the club as a gift.

Doug Amlin, 22, was stationed in Okinawa before his transfer to the Middle East. He has been a Marine for 3 1/2 years.
