Josh Gingrich School: Edison High School Sport: Football Position: Quarterback Class: Senior

After throwing only a handful of passes last season as a backup to Donnie Smith, Gingrich is in position to break single-season school records for passing yardage and touchdowns. Friday night in a 35-6 victory over Servite, he completed 23 of 32 passes for 363 yards and five touchdowns, breaking the school record for passing yards in a game and tying the record for touchdowns. Entering Edison’s first-round playoff game Friday, Gingrich is within 50 yards of the school record for a season, which Mike Angelovic set in 1985 (2,314), having passed for a county-high 2,271 yards. Eight of his 20 touchdown passes this season--three fewer than the record of 23 set by Frank Seurer in 1978--have been for more than 50 yards and Edison Coach Dave White believes Gingrich is the best long-ball thrower in the county. He has four talented receivers to throw to--Brandon Jessie, who has caught six touchdown passes in the five games he played, Mike Cunningham, who has six touchdown receptions, Ryan Blanchard and Rod Lippincott. Other top performers:

Billy Blanton, who completed 15 of 21 passes for 302 yards and three touchdowns in Mater Dei’s 48-21 victory over St. John Bosco Friday.

Rex Pritchard, who rushed 16 times for 176 yards and five touch-downs as Whittier Christian defeated Brethren Christian, 43-34, Friday.

David Shearer, who intercepted three passes and returned one 45 yards for a touchdown in Santa Margarita’s 33-6 victory over Warren Thursday.

Jarod Smith, who gained 233 yards in 21 carries, caught three passes for 67 yards and scored two touchdowns in Esperanza’s 42-21 victory over Katella Friday.
