HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Mt. Carmel Makes Division I Volleyball Final

Mt. Carmel High, the No. 2-seeded girls’ volleyball team, used a fifth-game rally to defeat San Dieguito, 7-15, 15-4, 15-9, 12-15, 15-7, in the semifinals of the Division I San Diego Section playoffs at University City.

Mt. Carmel (14-8) led 12-10 in the fourth game, but were forced to the deciding fifth-game by upset-minded San Dieguito, the No. 3-seeded team which finished 25-11.

“They played some real good defense against us,” Mt. Carmel Coach Barbara Charlebois said.

Shirley Aboyme led the Sundevils with 14 kills. Mt. Carmel advances to the final Thursday, where it will meet another Palomar League team, No. 1 Poway.

In the other Division semifinal:

Poway d. Rancho Buena Vista, 15-3, 15-5, 15-9--Poway had little trouble with No. 4 Rancho Buena Vista (21-14). Heather Collins had six kills for Poway (21-4).

Division II

Torrey Pines d. Escondido, 15-6, 15-9, 15-12--Sisters Amy and Christy Peters had 14 and 11 kills, respectively for No. 2 Torrey Pines (24-2) at Serra High. No. 3 Escondido finished 13-7.

Helix d. Monte Vista, 10-15, 15-6, 2-15, 15-2, 15-10--Never mind the odd scores, No. 1 Helix (31-0) will play in the championship Thursday against Torrey Pines.

Division IV

Calipatria d. Bishop’s, 11-15, 15-9. 10-15, 15-1, 15-3--Kaylie Orr had 12 kills in a losing effort for No. 3 Bishop’s (14-6). No. 2 Calipatria improved to 13-4.

Division V

Calvin Christian d. La Jolla Country Day, 15-6, 15-2, 15-13--Senior co-captains Annetta deJong and Corinna VanderWoude had six kills each for No. 2 Calvin Christian (15-5) at Grossmont High. DeJong added four blocks, and teammate Marsha Spoelstra had four service aces.

Francis Parker d. Julian, 15-3, 15-1, 15-3--Top-seeded Francis Parker routed No. 4 Julian (9-8). Julie Cheskaty had nine kills and Jill Meier eight for the Lancers (10-0), who will play Calvin Christian in the final Thursday.

Division III

Ramona d. Clairemont, 15-3, 15-12, 15-6--In a quarterfinal match at Ramona, the Bulldogs’ Montree Kiracose had 13 kills and five blocks and Amy Mosley added seven blocks. No. 4 Ramona (11-8) advanced to today’s semifinals at USDHS. Clairemont finished 11-8.

Water Polo

Poway 15, Granite Hills 10--In the 3-A quarterfinals at El Cajon Valley, No. 2 Poway (22-1) got four goals from Chad Aronen and six assists from Marc Giulianotti. Rhett Gaeir had four goals for Granite Hills (17-12).

Monte Vista 13, Mt. Miguel 11--No. 3 Monte Vista (19-4) advanced to Thursday’s semifinals, where they will meet Poway in the La Jolla Jewish Community Center. Mt. Miguel finished 15-13.

Coronado 23, Mira Mesa 11--In the other quarterfinal doubleheader at the Allied Garden Pool, Pat Mitchell had five goals, James Skaalen four and John Moinat and Michael Matherne had three each to lead top-seeded Coronado (27-4). The Islanders All-American goalie, Jack Bowen, had seven saves, playing only the first half. Mira Mesa finished 16-11.

Vista 16, Fallbrook 11--No. 4 Vista (16-8) outscored Fallbrook, 9-5, in the second half to pull away and advance to Thursday’s semifinal against Coronado at the La Jolla Jewish Community Center. Eric Hobson had nine goals for the Panthers. Jeff Peck scored six for Fallbrook (13-13).

Field Hockey

Bishop’s 0, Fallbrook 0 (OT; Bishop’s wins on strokes)--After a scoreless match and overtime period in a first-round playoff match in La Jolla, No. 4 Bishop’s (13-5) and Fallbrook went to two sets of five penalty strokes before the Knights won, 3-2. The first penalty stroke set ended in a 1-1 tie. Bishop’s Louis Brooks and Jenny Tsoulos scored in the second set and goalie Joanna Bone stopped eight of 10 Fallbrook strokes.

Serra 2, Torrey Pines 0--Chrissie Blackwell and Tina Montgomery scored for top-seeded Serra (14-3) to advance to Thursday’s semifinals against Bishop’s.

San Marcos 0 No. 3 Hilltop 0 (OT; San Marcos wins on strokes)--Similar to the Bishop’s-Fallbrook match, San Marcos won 4-2 on strokes after two sets of five shots. Jenny Fung, Kasey Cooper, Yvette Anaya and Jen Sampson scored for the Knights (15-4). No. 3 Hilltop finished 16-3.

Mira Mesa 2, Rancho Buena Vista 0--Three-year starters Suzie Mills and Dee Dee Spangler scored second-half goals. No. 2 Mira Mesa will meet San Marcos in Thursday’s semifinals. The Marauders defeated San Marcos, 3-0, in the first match of the season.

Girls’ Tennis

Every seeded singles players won their matches at Kit Carson Park and San Pasqual High to advance to the third round today.

No. 6 Betsy Miringoff of Torrey Pines had a tough time, however, in her first-round match. Miringoff rallied to win, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, over Angela Cruz of Mira Mesa in the day’s best match. Miringoff then cruised in the sedond round, 6-2, 6-2, over Lili Suciu of Grossmont.

Top-seeded Lynn Coakley of La Jolla won, 6-3, 6-1, over Elba Santaella of Vincent Memorial. No. 2 LeeAnn Rostovsky of La Jolla downed Marilyn Gaona of Hilltop, 6-0, 6-0.

None of the 16 second-round matches went to three sets. In fact, only two were even close. No. 3 Krista Kuechler of Torrey Pines won, 6-0, 7-5, over Angela McMahon of Winterhaven, and Melani Magosi of Our Lady of Peace defeated Michelle Morris of Bonita Vista, 7-6, 6-3.
