Reseda Defense Gets Help From Many Quarters

Share

Reseda High, moved from the City Section 3-A Division into the 4-A North Valley League this year, is playing for the league title Friday. To no one’s surprise, the Regents (5-3, 3-3 in league play) have done it with defense.

However, finding a particular standout is tough. The Regents have allowed averages of 191.5 yards and 10.1 points a game, but just about everybody has been in on the act.

For instance, what do Johnan Reece, Maurice Stepter, Henry McAlpine, Jon Van Duinwyk, Edgar Fernandez, Larry Trammel and Tim Schaeffer have in common?

All are tied for the team lead in interceptions . . . with one.

Defense: The El Camino Real defense is even stingier than Reseda’s, allowing an average of 171.3 yards a game. Eight different Conquistadores have recorded interceptions, but only Ryan Marine (two) has more than one. . . . Thousand Oaks defensive tackle Mike Ciandella has 12 sacks, five short of the school record set last season by Nick Ochoa.

Rushing: Shawn Hardy was among those watching from the Glendale sideline as Pathon Rucker broke Hardy’s single-season rushing record of 1,715 yards set 11 years ago. Rucker, a junior, rushed for 209 yards to bring his season total to 1,767. In addition, he leads all players in the state in scoring (192 points) and touchdowns (30).

With his 136 yards Friday, Kennedy tailback Ontiwaun Carter topped the 1,000-yard mark for the third consecutive season. As a sophomore, Carter rushed for 1,190 yards and as a junior, he gained 1,563. He has 1,045 this season.

Westlake’s Reuben Allen was limited to a season-low 37 yards Friday, but he still set a school record for rushing yards in a season with 1,215, breaking Jamin McNeil’s 1985 record of 1,204.

Harvard’s Kent Dahn scored three touchdowns Saturday to set a single-season school mark of 19.

Offense: Ryan Connors has passed for 2,085 yards this season, becoming the fifth Hart quarterback in a row to break 2,000. Rob Westervelt passed for 2,064 yards last season and Tom Bonds, Jim Bonds and Darren Renfro all broke the 2,000-yard mark.

Five Marmonte League quarterbacks have thrown for more than 1,000 yards, and Thousand Oaks’ Scott Peterson (966 yards) likely will become the sixth. . . . Peterson (15 touchdowns on 59 completions) averages one touchdown every 3.9 completions.

Sixteen Simi Valley players have caught at least one pass.
