Torrey Pines, La Jolla Have 2 Each in Semis

Players from the section 2-A and 3-A tennis champions, La Jolla and Torrey Pines, will face each other in the San Diego Section individual singles semifinals today at Kit Carson Park.

Second-seeded LeeAnn Rostovsky of La Jolla, who defeated fifth-seeded Vanessa Rooks of Monte Vista, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the quarters, will meet third-seeded Krista Kuechler of Torrey Pines, who beat Erin Bohrnstedt of Torrey Pines, 3-2 (retired).

Sixth-seeded Betsy Miringoff of Torrey Pines, who upset fourth-seeded Molly Gavin of San Pasqual, 6-4, 6-3, will meet top-seeded Lynn Coakley of La Jolla, who beat Britt Stenstrom of San Pasqual, 6-3, 6-0.

In the doubles, the top-seeded Marni Hunt and Summer Redondo of Coronado and second-seeded Leah Splavec and Katie Heyden of Poway advanced to the semifinals, but the third-seeded team of Kristi and Kelly McCracken of Torrey Pines were upset by Kate Pyle and Isobel Schoepflin of La Jolla Country Day, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

The singles and doubles semifinals begin at 2:30.

Water Polo

Valhalla 21, Bishop’s 3--No. 1 Valhalla (21-4) easily defeated No. 4 Bishop’s (17-7) at the Jewish Community Center to advance to Saturday’s finals against USDHS.

La Jolla 11, USDHS 10--Alex Chehansky capped a seven-goal performance with the game-winning goal 1 minute 5 seconds into overtime. USDHS goalie Larry Denny had 18 saves, including two in the overtime session. No. 2 USDHS improved to 16-9. Alex Krimm led La Jolla (20-9) with four goals.

Girls’ Volleyball

Division III

La Jolla d. Madison, 15-1, 15-8, 16-14--No. 2 La Jolla moved into Saturday’s finals with an easy victory over No. 3 Madison (15-10) at the Jewish Community Center.

USDHS d. Ramona, 15-9, 15-3, 15-5--Liz Pharis’ 11 kills led top-seeded USDHS (21-2) to an easy semifinal victory over fourth-seeded Ramona (10-9). USDHS will play La Jolla for the championship.
