ON THE SIDELINES : Griffin Makes It to Boxing Finals

American Eric Griffin, the world amateur light flyweight champion, advanced to the finals of the World Cup boxing tournament today by stopping Zoram Thanga of India in the third round.

Griffin will fight Orlando Ascensio for the title since the Cuban advanced by outpointing Dharmendra Yadav of India, 12-11.

Ascensio was one of four Cubans to move into the finals.

Juan Lemus stopped Ole Klemetsen of Norway in the third round of their light middleweight bout; Enrique Carrion beat Fred Muteweta of Uganda on points in their bantamweight match, and Roberto Balado won in the super-heavyweight division when Vernon Linklater of Canada quit in the second round.

In the other semifinal in the light middleweight section, Canadian Raymond Downey outpointed George Onyango of Kenya 17-21.
