CS Long Beach to Play Host to UNLV
Cal State Long Beach, trying for its first winning football season since 1986, will play Nevada Las Vegas in a Big West Conference game today at 1 p.m. in Veterans Stadium.
The 49ers are 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the Big West. Las Vegas is 4-6 and 3-3.
Coach George Allen said a victory is important for the future of the Long Beach program, adding: “We have to get better student support.”
Although they are 5-0 at home, the 49ers are averaging only 4,800 fans a game.
Long Beach quarterback Todd Studer, who has passed for 17 touchdowns, is 11th in the country in total offense with 2,388 yards.
Las Vegas uses two quarterbacks--Derek Stott, who has thrown for 1,706 yards, and Hunkie Cooper, who is sixth nationally with 1,622 all-purpose running yards. Cooper also plays flanker and returns kicks.
The Rebels have won the last four games in the series.
