Tustin Has No Trouble With Bassett

Tustin High School lived up to its top ranking in the CIF Division VI playoffs by rolling to a 34-0 first-round victory over Bassett of La Puente Friday night at Northrup Field.

While the defense, led by linebackers Aaron Gutridge and Josh Hylton, held Bassett to only two first downs, quarterback Andy Borza, running backs Visko Ancich and Ron Goods, wide receiver Robert Collier and placekicker Matt Coo led the offense.

The Tillers (11-0) scored less than two minutes into the game, on Ancich’s five-yard run. The senior running back added another touchdown on a one-yard dive with three minutes left in the first quarter.

Borza, a 6-2, 205-pound senior, connected on nine of 11 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. Collier was on the receiving end of four Borza passes, good for 53 yards and a touchdown.

Coo finished with 10 of the Tillers’ points, including field goals of 38 and 31 yards. Tustin plays Pacifica in the second round.

“Our defense was outstanding,” said Tustin Coach Marijon Ancich. “We shut down their Power I, which they had run well against everybody all year. We feel good about this win but we have a long way to go.”
