COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Advances in State Water Polo

Edvard Van Luijn and Dave Johnson scored five goals each to lead Golden West College to a 16-9 victory over Orange Coast in the semifinal round of the state water polo championships Friday at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.

Golden West (28-4) advances to today’s 1:30 title game against Cuesta (32-1), which defeated Grossmont in the other semifinal-round game.

Orange Coast and Golden West were tied, 1-1, after the first quarter but Golden West scored five consecutive goals in the second quarter and led, 6-2, at the half. Golden West held a 12-8 advantage after three quarters.

Golden West will be looking for its second consecutive title today but has lost to Cuesta three times in four meetings this season, including last Saturday in the Southern California championships.

Ken Nickel had five goals for Orange Coast (23-9), which plays Grossmont at noon today for third place.

In the quarterfinal round:

Orange Coast 16, De Anza 15--Nickel had seven goals, including one with 1 minute 13 seconds left, to break a 15-15 tie for Orange Coast in the quarterfinals. Arturo Sanchez and Michael McNeff had three goals each for OCC.

In the Cypress men’s basketball tournament:

Santa Rosa 69, Cypress 57--Flip Banks scored 11 and Chris Bowen 10 for Cypress (2-1), which plays Santa Monica for third place at 6 p.m. today. Santa Rosa plays Ventura at 8 p.m. for the championship.

In the Fullerton men’s basketball tournament:

Cerritos 71, Saddleback 70--Darryl McMillion hit one of two free throws with five seconds left to break a 70-70 tie for Cerritos (4-0). Saddleback (1-1) did not get a shot off in its final possession. Matt Thompson had nine rebounds and 11 points, and Keith Ison and Will Hutcheson each scored 13 points for Saddleback. Carlos Palomino led Cerritos with 13.

Long Beach 104, Fullerton 79--Kenny Cross scored 23 for Fullerton (2-2), which plays Saddleback at 6 p.m. for third place. Long Beach plays Cerritos at 8 p.m. in the championship game.

In the Rancho Santiago men’s basketball tournament:

Rancho Santiago 100, Southwestern 58--Erik Martin scored 18 to lead Rancho Santiago (2-0), which plays Chaffey today at 5 p.m.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Orange Coast 81, Mira Costa 70--Orange Coast College scored the final 11 points over the last 2:53 to take a nonconference men’s basketball victory over host Mira Costa Friday.

Shane Takeshita scored 20 points and Rich Hughes added 12 for OCC (2-0). Mira Costa is 1-1.

In the consolation semifinals of the Long Beach tournament:

LA Pierce 67, Saddleback 64--Erin Schimeneck had 22 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots and Shannon Garnos had 19 points for Saddleback (2-2).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Southwestern 80, Cypress 58--Heidi Sorour had 18 points for Cypress (0-3).

Cerritos 63, Orange Coast 53--Erika Manning had 16 points and six rebounds for Orange Coast (2-1). Heide Crammer of Cerritos had 19 points.
