Two people were killed and two others seriously injured early Saturday in a head-on collision caused by a wrong-way driver along Interstate 15, the California Highway Patrol said.

The drivers of both vehicles were killed at the scene, which was in the northbound lanes of the busy freeway, just north of Miramar Way.

The incident occurred at 3:15 a.m., authorities said, when a car headed south in the northbound lanes of I-15 crashed head-on into an oncoming vehicle.

The identities of the dead drivers were being withheld pending notification of relatives, authorities said.

The wrong-way driver was alone in the car, the highway patrol said, but two passengers in the northbound vehicle suffered serious injuries.

One passenger, Ronald Anderson, 30, of Long Beach, was in fair condition at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

The other, Ronald Winters, 35, of Huntington Beach, was in serious condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital.

The CHP is investigating the incident.
