SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A season of frustration and disappointment finally came to an end for Cal Lutheran’s football team at Mt. Clef Stadium on Saturday.

In a game that could easily sum up CLU’s long season, the Kingsmen turned the ball over eight times in dropping a 31-6 nonconference decision to San Francisco State.

“The fewer comments I make after a game like this, the better off I will be,” first-year CLU Coach Joe Harper said. “I will say that I am disappointed we didn’t play better, but we were simply overmatched and outperformed by a San Francisco State team that was one of the best teams we have played all year.”

San Francisco State (4-7), which had beaten CLU only once in 10 previous meetings, was paced by running back William Harris, who rushed for 131 yards in 20 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Cal Lutheran (2-8) gave up the ball four times near midfield and four other times in Gator territory--at the 39-, 40-, 17-, and 16-yard lines. Two of the turnovers led to San Francisco State scores.

San Francisco State lost its shutout when CLU lineman Ron Matthews recovered a fumble at the Gator 11-yard line with 27 seconds left, setting up running back Alonzo Williams’ three-yard touchdown run two plays later.

Williams was the leading rusher for the Kingsmen with 34 yards in nine carries. Tom Leogrande, normally a wide receiver, started his second consecutive game at quarterback and completed eight of 21 passes for 121 yards. He threw two interceptions.
