Contract talks in New York between the major and minor leagues turned bitter Sunday as both sides said they were prepared to sever their 87-year-old relationship.

The minor leagues accused the majors of trying to pass on “irresponsibly high costs,” and the majors said the minor leagues’ final proposal for a new agreement was an “ill-concealed attempt to hold up major league baseball.”

The chief negotiator for the major leagues said the commissioner’s office would begin discussions to start new minor leagues.
