Inoperable Hand Grenade, Bomb Force Evacuation

Share

Relatives of a man who recently died found a torpedo-like bomb and a hand grenade Tuesday in his San Pedro housing-project apartment, forcing the evacuation of the neighborhood and a housing authority office, police said.

Neither device was found to be explosive, Sgt. Ron Waugh said.

Relatives of the deceased 70-year-old man found the items while cleaning out his apartment in the San Pedro housing project.

They showed the devices to a maintenance man who took the grenade to a housing authority office about two blocks away. When the man appeared with the device, workers called police.

Bomb squad officers evacuated several blocks surrounding the apartment and the housing project office for about two hours until they determined that neither device was in danger of exploding.

Waught said the former resident of the apartment apparently collected the devices.
