UCSD Beats Point Loma Nazarene

UC San Diego scored a 102-82 victory over cross-town rival Point Loma Nazarene College in a nonconference basketball game at UCSD.

Tim Rapp led the way for UCSD (2-0), a Division III school, with 35 points. Teammates Rick Batt and John Spence added 14 and 11 points respectively.

Point Loma Nazarene, an NAIA school, was leb by Mark Bulgin’s 16 points and Mike Flores’ 12 rebounds and 15 points.

The Fellowship of Christian athletes made six of six free throws in the final minute and a half to defeat USIU, 104-101.

The Blue Angels went out to a 35-9 lead in the first half before going in at halftime up, 59-46.

USIU’s Kevin Bradshaw led all scorers with 36 points.

Lance Williams, a former standout at Grossmont High School and Grossmont College, led Cal Baptist back from a five-point deficit with 2:40 to go as the Lancers pulled out a 69-63 victory over Christian Heritage by outscoring the Hawks, 14-3, down the stretch in a game played in Riverside.

Williams had six of his 18 points in the final 2:40. He also had three steals and six assists.

Vernaldo Butler, another former Grossmont College player, now with the Hawks, led both teams with 21 points.

It was the Hawks’ third consecuitve defeat. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma Nazarene College got 18 points and 11 rebounds from Shannon Abrams and beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 54-45. Staci Eggers also had 11 rebounds for the Crusaders. HOCKEY

Center Jim McGeough has left the Gulls to join a professional team in Stuttgart, Germany, General Manager Don Waddell announced. McGeough had played in just one of the Gulls last five games and 10 overall, and scored two goals and had four assists. WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

San Diego State’s Angela Martin, Jennifer Miller and Gracie Schutt were named to the all-Western Athletic Conference volleyball team, chosen by the conference’s coaches and sports information directors.

Martin, a senior outside hitter, is ranked 21st nationally in kills per game (4.57). Schutt, a sophomore outside hitter, is ranked 13th nationally and leads the WAC in service aces per game (0.67). Miller, a sophomore, leads the WAC in blocks per game average (1.47).

SDSU finished third in the WAC and is currently ranked 18th nationally. The Aztecs are awaiting an NCAA tournament bid Sunday.

Angela Martin had 12 kills and Gracie Schutt had five aces to lead SDSU by U.S. International, 15-0, 15-4, 15-13.
