Forrest Gregg said Tuesday night he will step down as Southern Methodist football coach after Saturday’s season finale against Arkansas but will remain the school’s athletic director.

“This was a difficult decision for me and my family, and I came back to SMU because we care deeply about the university,” said Gregg, a lineman for the Mustangs in 1953-55.

Gregg said a search for his successor as football coach would begin immediately.

Gregg, who coached three NFL teams, was named SMU coach in January of 1988. He brought the Mustangs back from the NCAA “death penalty,” and has a 3-18 record over two seasons. SMU is 1-9 this season.
