A $3-Million Harvest of Hope

City of Hope Medical Center is the beneficiary of more than $3 million raised at the 15th annual Harvest Ball hosted by the Food Industries Circle for the City of Hope on Nov. 16 at the Century Plaza. Funds go to the City of Hope and its Beckman Research Institute. Dinner chairman was Harland Polk, senior vice president of sales and merchandising, Hughes Markets. Circle president is Maurice Charlat, president and CEO of Atlans-Horn Food Service Inc.

Hugh O’Brian Youth Foundation raised $465,000 at its Albert Schweitzer Leadership Award gala on Nov. 14 at the Beverly Hilton. The funds will support leadership seminars for outstanding sophomores in 13,000 high schools in the United States, the Bahamas, Canada and Mexico. Dinner chairmen were Peter W. Mullin, Robert H. Smith and James Stewart.

UCLA College of Letters & Science raised $30,000 at the Pagen/Pauley Fellowship Recognition Dinner held Nov. 5 at Madame Wu’s Garden in Santa Monica. The proceeds support graduate student fellowships in a program established in 1988 by a $5-million gift from William R. and Barbara Pauley Pagen.

Torrance Memorial Medical Center was the recipient of $13,000 raised by the Luminaries at their “Night Magic” gala on Oct. 20. Nordstrom Department Store underwrote the event, attended by 500 guests at Galleria South Bay. Judy Sipes is Luminaries president. D’Aulan Gentry was event chair.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center cardiology department’s Dr. James Forrester received a pledge of $2 million from United Hostesses’ Charities to develop a basic science and clinical program in preventive cardiology. Ilene Nathan is United Hostesses president.

Five Acres has received $47,500, net proceeds of the seventh annual Teradata Invitational Golf Tournament held July 30. The money will be used for Five Acres’ capital campaign to expand its facilities to serve 20 additional abused and neglected children at its Altadena campus. Tournament directors were Sally Simonds, Beth Donathan and Paulette Trimbell.

Westside Food Bank held its first Hunger Walk Oct. 28 in Santa Monica with the support of more than 500 walkers and their sponsors. The event was underwritten by First Federal Bank and was hosted by Daniel J. Travanti and Richard Kline. The walk netted $35,000 to be used for programs to prevent homelessness in Los Angeles.

Keren Dorot Family Fund Program will receive the $80,000 netted at a luncheon held at the Century Plaza Hotel Sept. 16. The event, sponsored by Jewish National Fund, was attended by more than 200 guests. Honorees included Georgia Holt and Jacqueline Stallone.
