COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Martin’s 25 Helps Rancho Santiago Win

Sophomore forward Erik Martin scored 25 points to lead Rancho Santiago College to a 91-69 victory over Citrus in the first round of the College of the Desert men’s basketball tournament Friday at Palm Desert.

Sophomore guard Brett Pagett scored 16 points and sophomore forward Corie Blount added 10 for Rancho Santiago (4-1), the defending state champions.

In the Ventura men’s basketball tournament:

El Camino 70, Cypress 69--Steve King scored 31 points, including a layup with four seconds left, to lead El Camino. Cypress (2-3) trailed, 66-61, with one minute left when Charles Lockard scored eight consecutive points on a three-point basket, two free throws and a another three-point basket to give Cypress a 69-68 lead with 27 seconds left.

Lockard had 16 points and five assists and Eric Pauley had 22 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots for El Camino (5-2). Pauley played for the first time in three games after twisting his right ankle.

In the College of the Desert women’s basketball tournament:

Saddleback 50, Chaffey 49--Shannon Garnos scored on a 15-foot jump shot with three seconds left to give Saddleback (4-2) a first-round victory. Garnos had 17 points and Erin Schimeneck had seven points and 11 rebounds for Saddleback.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Fullerton 92, Ventura 50--Keri Erkenbrack scored 18 points to lead host Fullerton (5-0). Nicky Duriqi had 17 points and Vicki Evans and Holy Keeton each had 14 points for Fullerton.

Golden West 123, Compton 84--Bits Sirchia set a Golden West single-game record with 23 assists. Jennifer Harvey and Dawn Haag each scored 22 points and Sirchia added 12 for Golden West, which opened a 31-5 lead.

Adrienne Hughes and Tracy Wolf scored 16 each for Golden West, the defending state champions.
