Fire Damages Mansion Under Construction

A spectacular fire at a partially built Palos Verdes Estates mansion sent flames more than 200 feet into the air early Saturday and threatened to engulf expensive homes nearby before it was put out about an hour later, police and fire officials said.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the blaze is under investigation, said Steven Sloan, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight at a 6,000-square-foot house in the 1900 block of Paseo del Sol, Sloan said. Damage to the house was estimated at $200,000. The fire consumed two acres of brush in a canyon and roared to within several hundred feet of nearby homes, but no other structures were damaged, Sloan said.
