NHL ROUNDUP : Oilers Pour Through Penguin Defense, 7-3

Share

The Pittsburgh Penguins have the most porous defense in the National Hockey League.

It really leaked Tuesday night at Pittsburgh.

The struggling Edmonton Oilers, with Mark Messier setting up four goals, scored five times in the last two periods and routed the Penguins, 7-3.

In only 24 games, the Penguins have given up 93 goals.

Phil Borque scored twice in the first period to give the Penguins a 3-2 lead.

But, the Oilers scored twice in less than two minutes in the second period to take the lead and made it a rout in the last period.

The victory was only the seventh in 22 games for the Stanley Cup champions. They are last in the Smythe Division, 18 points behind the Kings.

Philadelphia 5, New York Islanders 1--The Flyers scored three goals on one major penalty in the second period at Uniondale, N.Y., and broke open a tough game. Pelle Ecklund scored two of them.

It was a scoreless game when Islanders defenseman Ken Baumgartner attacked the Flyers’ Rick Tocchet. Tocchet didn’t fight back and escaped penalty.

It was a scoreless game at that point, but on the five-minute penalty, the Flyers took command. The Islanders allowed only three goals in the previous 54 times they were short-handed.

Toronto 4, St. Louis 3--Brett Hull scored his league-leading 24th goal and had an assist at St. Louis, but Wendel Clark of the Maple Leafs stole the show.

Clark, whose goal gave Toronto a 2-0 lead in the first period, scored again at 3:58 of overtime to end Toronto’s 10-game road losing streak.

Minnesota 1, Vancouver 1--Gino Odjick scored his first NHL goal late in the second period to give the Canucks a tie with the North Stars at Vancouver.
