The Aztecs may have been shut out of a bowl this season, but four players have been invited to post-season all-star bowls:

--Quarterback Dan McGwire will play in the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Game.

--Offensive tackle Nick Subis will play in the Blue-Gray Game and in the All-American Game.

--Receiver Dennis Arey will play in the Blue-Gray Game and East-West Shrine Game.

--Defensive end Pio Sagapolutele will play in the Hula Bowl.

“I wasn’t expecting anything like this to come out of this year,” Arey said. “It’s almost been a dream year. I’m thankful everyone has stayed healthy. The offensive line has been great.”

Arey said he doesn’t mind playing on Christmas Day, the day the Blue-Gray Game is scheduled.

“I’ve got to look at it this way: It might be my last chance to enjoy football if pro football is not an option.”

The Hula Bowl, meanwhile, means something else to Sagapolutele.

“First of all, I get to go home for free,” said Sagapolutele, a native of Honolulu, site of the Hula Bowl. “It’s been a long time since my whole family has gotten to watch me play in person. I guess a lot of people want to see how I’ve done since I left the islands.”

Actually, it hasn’t been that long. The Aztecs played at Hawaii last season.

SDSU Coach Al Luginbill said he telephoned Texas El Paso Coach David Lee Monday and they worked out their differences regarding Saturday’s 58-31 SDSU victory. Lee had been angry because he thought SDSU was running up the score. Luginbill said he explained his position regarding Patrick Rowe’s record--Rowe tied an NCAA mark with his eighth consecutive game of 100 or more yards receiving. “It’s a dead issue as far as I’m concerned,” Luginbill said. . . . Luginbill said the Aztecs had a good day of practice Tuesday as they prepared for Miami Saturday. He also said it’s been a long season. “I started counting up the weeks the other day,” he said. “I think we’re in our 14th or 15th week. When it reached 12 I said, ‘Forget it.’ ” . . . Miami, rated No. 2 in the AP poll and 3 in the UPI poll, is the highest-rated team to face the Aztecs in San Diego. SDSU has never beaten a top-10 team.
