Fullerton Goes Cold at Tulsa, 89-63
Tulsa reeled off 19 unanswered points during an 8 1/2-minute stretch of the first half en route to an 89-63 nonconference victory over Cal State Fullerton Wednesday night before 5,320 in Tulsa’s Maxwell Convention Center.
After Wayne Williams’ fast-break basket trimmed Tulsa’s lead to 12-8 with 14:20 left in the half, the Titans (0-2) didn’t score again until the 5:58 mark when Aaron Wilhite made a jumper. That made it 31-10.
The Golden Hurricane’s pressure defense helped Fullerton set a school record for turnovers with 29, breaking the previous mark of 27, set against Cal State Los Angeles in 1977 and matched against Loyola Marymount in 1979.
Four players--Lou Dawkins (15), Jason Ludwig (12), Marcell Gordon (11) and Wade Jenkins (10)--scored in double figures for Tulsa. Ron Caldwell led Fullerton with 16 points. Joe Small had 13, 17 fewer than he scored Monday against Lamar.
