Australia, in a surprise move today, bypassed Pat Cash and picked Richard Fromberg and Darren Cahill to play singles against Americans Andre Agassi and Michael Chang in the Davis Cup final.

Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon champion, will instead be teamed with John Fitzgerald for the doubles match against Jim Pugh and Rick Leach on Saturday.

The best-of-five final, played on a synthetic clay surface at the Florida Suncoast Dome, begins Friday night with Fromberg playing Agassi and Cahill facing Chang.

On Sunday, Cahill plays Agassi and Fromberg meets Chang.

The 20-year-old Fromberg is Australia’s best clay-court player but has no Davis Cup experience. Cash, Masur and Cahill have experience, but are better known for successes on faster surfaces.
