David Smith, a 45-year-old financial planner and first-term Camarillo city councilman, has been chosen to succeed Charlotte Craven as mayor. Stanley J. Daily, a longtime city official who recently was reelected to the council, has been appointed vice mayor.

The council voted unanimously Wednesday evening to appoint Smith and Daily to the one-year positions. Smith has served on the council since 1988. Daily served as vice mayor and mayor in the 1960s and 1970s.

Both men said Thursday that they have several goals.

Smith said he plans to keep a close watch on the city’s finances to ensure that Camarillo continues to recover from money troubles stemming from poor investments several years ago. Smith also plans to encourage more recycling and water conservation.

And he said he will work on a thorough review of Camarillo’s General Plan, which will be revised to address uses for city agricultural land.

Daily said the review of the General Plan is also one of his top priorities.

“We’re at a crossroads,” Daily said. “There will be challenges ahead, no doubt about it.”
