The 1990 Times Orange County Holiday Parade, with celebrated teacher Jaime Escalante as grand marshal, will take place Saturday morning in downtown Santa Ana.

The theme of this year’s parade is “Learning--Celebrate Life’s Adventure.” Leading the parade will be Escalante, whose achievements as a teacher at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles were portrayed in the 1988 film “Stand and Deliver.”

Several giant cartoon character balloons will also be featured. This year’s collection of helium-filled balloons, some as tall as 75 feet, will include Mighty Mouse, Popeye and Olive Oyl, Raggedy Ann and Heathcliff the Cat.

The parade, produced each year by more than 500 volunteers, will also feature celebrities, floral floats, high school marching bands and equestrian units.

The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. at Civic Center Drive and Broadway. It proceeds north on Broadway to 17th Street, travels east on 17th Street to Main Street, goes south on Main and concludes at Main and Washington.

The parade will be televised live on KCAL Channel 9.
