COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Connecticut Survives Patient Yale, 49-48

John Gwynn’s scoop shot with 1:22 left enabled No. 15 Connecticut to avoid an upset and edge Yale, 49-48, Thursday night at New Haven, Conn.

The Elis (1-2) had a chance for the upset when Dean Campbell stole the ball from Rod Sellers with 14 seconds left. But Ed Petersen, pressured by Connecticut’s Chris Smith, put up an airball from 15 feet as time ran out.

Gwynn scored 12 points of his 14 points in the second half as the Huskies (3-0) overcame Yale’s patient offense.

Temple 70, No. 24 Villanova 57--Mik Kilgore scored 21 points and the Owls surprised the No. 24 Wildcats at Villanova, Pa.

Mark Macon and Donald Hodge added 17 points as Temple (1-1), which had a 39-29 halftime lead, took control with a 14-1 run in the second half after Villanova (2-1) pulled to within 49-47.

Lance Miller scored 16 points and Greg Woodard had 15 for Villanova.

No. 23 Missouri 81, Florida A&M; 52--Jamal Coleman scored 18 points and freshman Jevon Crudup added 17 as the Tigers beat the Rattlers at Columbia, Mo.

The Tigers (1-1) scored the first seven points and built a 46-30 halftime lead by making 66% of their shots.

Reginald Kennion scored 20 points for Florida A&M; (1-1).

EAST

Jean Prioleau’s three-pointer at the buzzer capped a 25-point performance and gave Fordham (2-1) a 69-68 victory over Seton Hall at New York. Anthony Avent scored 22 points for Seton Hall (1-1), including a basket with 13 seconds left to give the Pirates a 68-66 lead.

MIDWEST

Tony Freeman scored 27 points to lead Illinois Chicago (1-0) to a 71-60 victory over Illinois (2-2) at Champaign, Ill. It was the Illini’s first nonconference defeat on its home court since an 85-74 loss to North Carolina on Dec. 19, 1987. . . . Wisconsin (2-0) went on a 20-2 run at the outset of the second half and defeated San Francisco State, 72-53, at Madison, Wis. Erik Fisher had 18 points for the Gators (3-2). . . . Chuckie Murphy scored 21 points and Stephen Howard added 16 to lead DePaul (2-0) to a 117-65 trouncing of Florida International at Rosemont, Ill. The Blue Demons forced the Golden Panthers (1-2) into 26 turnovers and had 15 steals in the first half. Cesar Bocachica had 15 points for Florida International. . . . Matt Kramer hit six three-point baskets, tying a Miami (Ohio) record, and scored with 22 points to lead the Redskins (1-1) to a 103-78 victory over Fairfield (1-1) at Oxford, Ohio.

Allan Houston scored 23 points and Larry Wiseman added 17 as Tennessee (2-1) made 64% of its shots in a 93-69 victory over Kent at Knoxville, Tenn. Harold Walton scored 21 points for the Golden Flashes (2-2).

Stevin Smith scored 25 points and Arizona State (3-0) trounced Northern Arizona, 118-77, at Tempe, Ariz. Corey Rogers had 18 points for Northern Arizona (0-3). . . . Reggie Jordan scored 15 points as New Mexico State (3-0) defeated Texas El Paso, 70-55, at Las Cruces, N.M. Mark McCall scored 17 points for the Miners (1-1). . . . Tim Breaux scored 23 points and Wyoming (2-0) rolled past Missouri St. Louis, 101-76, at Laramie, Wyo. Chris Pilz scored 28 points for the Rivermen (2-1). . . . Steve Schreiner scored 22 points to lead Brigham Young (2-1) to a 69-57 victory over Weber State (2-1) at Ogden, Utah. Freshman Shawn Bradley added 14 points and eight rebounds for BYU. . . . Rhea Taylor had 27 points and 15 rebounds to lead Santa Clara past Pacific, 73-60. Santa Clara is 3-1, Pacific 0-2.
