A car traveling at a high rate of speed failed to negotiate a curve and ran off an El Cajon road late Friday, killing the passenger and injuring the driver, the California Highway Patrol said.
The incident occurred at 10 p.m. in the 1400 block of El Monte Road. Information was not available on what caused the driver to lose control of the eastbound car, which overturned several times after it ran off the road.
The dead man, the sole passenger, was identified as Mark Carlson, 19, an active-duty Navy employee who lived in San Diego, authorities said.
The driver, Albert Slattman, 21, of Lakeside, was in fair condition at UC California Medical Center.
