Phil Bourque had his first NHL hat trick and Mark Recchi picked up five assists as the Pittsburgh Penguins tied a team record for goals in a road game with a 9-4 decision over the New York Rangers on Monday night.

Ranger goalies John Vanbiesbrouck and Mike Richter, who had combined for the second-best goals-against average in the NHL (2.69), gave up the nine goals on 36 shots.

The Penguins were 1-6 in their previous seven games. They had scored nine goals in a road game on three previous occasions--the last time at Minnesota on Jan. 12, 1989.

Pittsburgh led, 4-1, after one period, despite being outshot 14-12.

Hartford 4, Montreal 2--Kevin Dineen scored two goals to lead the Whalers in their fifth consecutive road victory.

Mikail Anderson and Scott Young also scored for Hartford, which moved ahead of Buffalo into third place in the Adams Division. The Whalers improved their road record to 6-6-1.

Mike Keane and Shayne Corson scored for Montreal, which has lost four of its last five games at home and is 8-6-1 overall at the Forum.

New Jersey 4, Winnipeg 4--Ed Olczyk’s power-play goal earned the struggling Jets a come-from-behind tie with New Jersey at Winnipeg.

Olczyk, who also set up the Jets’ third goal as they overcame a two-goal deficit, tipped a shot past Devil goalie Sean Burke 41 seconds into the third period.

The Jets were outshot, 34-31, and have only one victory in eight games and a 9-17-4 record.
