THE SIDELINES : Gorman to Captain U.S. Davis Cup Team for the Sixth Time
Tom Gorman, who led the U.S. Davis Cup team to victory over Australia last weekend, will stay on as captain in 1991, the U.S. Tennis Assn. announced today.
Gorman, a player on the team that won the championship round in 1972, will be serving as captain for the sixth year. In addition to this year’s triumph, he skippered the team that reached the semifinals in 1989.
“Tom has brought America’s Davis Cup program to heights all of us are extremely proud of,” USTA President David Markin said in a statement. “He has shown sensitivity and leadership in what is a very public position and we are pleased to have him as our captain.”
