SOUTHLAND : Woman Killed, 2 Hurt by Train
A woman tripped as she scrambled across train tracks at Del Mar station this morning and was killed instantly when she was struck by a freight train, authorities said.
A second woman and a man who were trying to help the woman get out of the train’s way also were hurt.
The second woman also was hit by the northbound Santa Fe train and was in critical condition at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. The man suffered minor injuries.
The accident occurred at about 6:40 a.m. in front of dozens of horrified bystanders waiting at the station for a Los Angeles-bound commuter train. Witnesses told investigators that the three apparently heard a whistle and, thinking they might miss the Amtrak passenger train, took a short cut across the tracks toward the station platform.
