BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Northridge Women Hold Off Nevada Reno in 72-67 Win

The Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team raced to a big first-half lead, but had to weather a furious Nevada Reno rally to emerge with a 72-67 victory Tuesday night at CSUN.

The Matadors (3-4) never trailed and led by 17 points at halftime, but Nevada Reno (0-4) closed to 67-65 with less than two minutes remaining.

Haily Griffith hit a baseline jump shot with 54 seconds left to put Northridge ahead, 69-65, and Shagarro Lattin made two free throws 12 seconds later to help preserve the win. Senior forward Julie Arlotto scored a game-high 19 points and made three free throws to equal the Northridge free-throw career record of 291 set by Denise Sitton from 1983-86.

BOYS

Faith Baptist 101, Oak Park 57--The defending Southern Section 1-A Division champion raced to a 50-24 lead at halftime in a first-round game of the Faith Baptist tournament.

Guard Alex Estrada made 11 of 17 shots from the field and all eight of his free throws to finish with 31 points.

Camp Kilpatrick 85, Village Christian 66--Marlon Randolph scored 26 points and John Ross added 23 to pace the Mustangs’ first-round victory over Village Christian (1-1) in the Faith Baptist tournament.

Nordhoff 71, Carpinteria 54--Junior guard Tim Sebek scored a game-high 26 points and added 11 rebounds and five assists to lead host Nordhoff in a nonleague game.

St. Joseph 76, Santa Paula 73--Joey Ramirez and George Albanez each scored 20 points for Santa Paula in a nonleague opener at home.

GIRLS

Hart 58, Canyon 38--Anjanette Dionne scored a game-high 23 points and added six assists to lead host Hart (2-0) in a nonleague game.

Rio Mesa 90, Camarillo 52--Marion Jones scored 32 points, had 10 steals and five assists as host Rio Mesa (2-0) tied a school record for most points set in 1982 against Santa Paula.
